Your First Dog
Everything you need to know before getting your first dog

Welcoming your first dog into your life is an exciting prospect. There is the anticipation of choosing a companion, bringing them home and enjoying everything from your first walks together to the moment they respond to something you have taught them. It is also a considerable responsibility, and one that begins well before your dog arrives.
What sort of dog will suit your lifestyle? What will they need at home? How do you help them settle in, understand their behaviour and begin training? And how do you recognise the difference between an everyday difficulty and something that needs professional help?
Your First Dog is a practical guide to the questions new owners ask — and some of the important things they may not yet know to ask. It takes you through the different stages of dog ownership, helping you prepare, make informed decisions and build a rewarding relationship with your dog.
Starting in October 2026, we are publishing the book here as a series of weekly chapters.
Each instalment will explore a different aspect of living with and caring for a dog, giving you time to read, reflect and put relevant ideas into practice before moving on to the next subject.
A guide for everyday life with your dog
Owning a dog involves much more than providing food, going for walks and teaching a few commands. Dogs need opportunities to rest, explore, play and learn. They also need help to feel comfortable in our human world, where unfamiliar people, animals, noises and situations can sometimes be confusing or overwhelming.
This series brings those needs together in one accessible guide. We begin with choosing a dog whose needs you can realistically meet, then look at preparing your home and supporting those important first days. Later chapters cover health, nutrition, behaviour, training, exercise and routine care, alongside travel, responsibilities and the changes that come as a dog grows older.
Throughout the series, the emphasis is on understanding your dog and helping them learn through patient, reward-based training. The aim is to give you a useful foundation for everyday decisions, with practical information you can return to as your circumstances and your dog’s needs change.
Every dog is an individual. Age, health, previous experiences and temperament all influence how they respond to life with us. Learning to observe your own dog, recognise what they find easy or difficult and adjust your expectations is an important part of becoming a confident owner.
Who is the series for?
Your First Dog is written primarily for people considering their first dog and those who have recently welcomed one into their home. Whether you are preparing for a puppy or adopting an adult dog, the series will help you think through what lies ahead.
It may also be useful if you are returning to dog ownership after a gap, or would simply like to revisit the foundations of good care and training. Other members of the household can benefit too: a shared understanding of your dog’s needs helps everyone provide consistent support.
You do not need any previous training experience, or plans to enter competitions. The starting point is everyday life: helping your dog feel secure, developing good habits and making your time together enjoyable. As your confidence grows, you may also discover activities you would like to explore together.
