How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Really Need

1 min read

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all number. Quality, variety and recovery matter as much as minutes walked.

Age, breed type, conformation, health, fitness and temperament all influence need. A high-drive young dog may require structured activity and help settling; an older dog may prefer several shorter outings. Breed ancestry does not automatically prepare an unfit dog for endurance.

Walking is only part of the picture. Sniffing, exploring, safe free movement, play and mental activity all contribute. A slow scent-led walk may be more satisfying than marching the same distance at speed.

Watch recovery. Exercise should not routinely leave a dog stiff, lame, exhausted or reluctant the next day. Increase time, distance, speed or difficulty one at a time. Puppies, older dogs, overweight dogs and those with medical conditions need appropriate individual plans.

Rest is part of fitness. Alternate demanding work with easier days and adjust when weather, health or behaviour changes.
