Safe Dog Walking on Darker Evenings

A few practical changes can make autumn walks safer without making them less enjoyable.

Choose familiar, well-lit routes. Carry a charged phone and torch rather than depending on street lighting. Reflective clothing and dog equipment improve visibility, but nothing should restrict movement or dazzle the dog.

Inspect new routes in daylight. Darkness conceals holes, glass, branches and mud. Keep the dog close around roads, livestock and wildlife. A long line can allow exploration, but attach it to a suitable harness and use it away from traffic and entanglement hazards.

Illumination does not replace identification. Check the collar tag, microchip record, clips, stitching and batteries. Call the dog back early when others approach; a friendly dog emerging from darkness may still frighten people or dogs.

Afterwards, check paws and coat, dry wet dogs and ensure short-coated, elderly or vulnerable dogs remain comfortable.
