Is Your Dog Overweight

Weight gain is often easier to feel than see. Breed charts cannot account for every frame, so body condition matters alongside the scales.

Run flat hands over the ribs. In many healthy dogs they should be easy to feel beneath a light covering. Look from above for a waist behind the ribs and from the side for an abdominal tuck. A heavy coat can hide both.

Other clues include a tightening collar or harness, reduced play, slower recovery, difficulty with stairs or less enthusiasm for jumping into the car. These can also indicate pain or illness, so do not assume weight is the only explanation.

Take monthly photographs from above and the side and add regular weighing. Ask the veterinary team to assess body condition if uncertain. Sudden weight change, unusual hunger, lethargy or exercise intolerance needs professional advice. Never impose a crash diet or sudden strenuous exercise.

Once a plan is agreed, weigh meals, count treats and change gradually. The purpose is not to make every dog thin; it is to support comfortable movement and an active life.
